US President Donald Trump attacked Barack Obama at the G7 summit on June 17. The 80-year-old accused the former President of “bribing” Tehran to secure its agreement to the 2015 nuclear deal.
Here’s a breakdown of Donald Trump’s latest tirade against Barack Obama
Trump stated that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), negotiated during the Obama administration, transferred a significant amount of money to Iran as part of the agreement.
He said, as per The Daily Beast, “Nobody could have made this deal. I mean, the JCPOA, done by Obama. He gave him $1.7 billion in cash, green cash from banks, into a Boeing 757 and flew it into Iran,” Trump further added, “He tried to bribe his way out. I didn’t do that. Nobody mentions that… And you know what the Iranians did? They laughed at Obama. And they said, ‘He’s a stupid son of a b****.” The comments came during a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The 2015 JCPOA between Iran and six world powers imposed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief, states Council of Foreign Affairs. In 2018, Trump pulled the United States out of the agreement, arguing it failed to curb Iran’s missile programme and regional influence. He called it the “worst deal ever”, reports Al Jazeera.
Trump, during the G7 summit, said the ceasefire agreement with Iran was still not final. Speaking to reporters, as quoted by The Guardian, he said, “It’s not final. It’s a memorandum of understanding, and if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head. If I don’t like it, if they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head, okay, because they’ve misbehaved for 47 years.”
According to Reuters, the U.S.–Iran deal is expected to launch negotiations for a final settlement aimed at ending the war, which left over 7,000 dead, mostly in Iran and Lebanon.
