Justin Trudeau Defends Skipping Canada’s World Cup Opener To Support Katy Perry

Justin Trudeau found himself defending an unexpected World Cup decision after choosing Los Angeles over Toronto on one of the biggest nights in Canadian soccer. The former Prime Minister of Canada skipped his country’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and instead showed up to support his girlfriend, Katy Perry, at the United States opener.

For some fans, it looked like a case of misplaced national pride. For Trudeau, it was apparently a simple matter of boyfriend priorities.

While Canada battled Bosnia & Herzegovina to a 1-1 draw in Toronto, Trudeau was sitting at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles watching the United States defeat Paraguay. The timing immediately sparked backlash online, with some Canadians questioning why a former national leader wasn’t cheering on the home team.

Trudeau didn’t seem too bothered by the criticism. Responding on X after his absence made headlines, he wrote, “Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I’m rooting for to take the Cup,” adding a Canadian flag emoji.

His appearance wasn’t exactly random. Perry was one of the headline performers at the World Cup opening festivities in Los Angeles, taking the stage alongside Tyla, Future, Anitta, LISA, and Rema. The singer also performed “Wonder” from her 2024 album 143.

Speaking to People ahead of the event, Perry explained her song choice, saying it was “very fitting for the ceremonial song that I get to sing.”

The couple’s relationship has been steadily making headlines since they were first linked in 2025. Cameras at the match even caught Perry greeting Trudeau with a kiss before the pair settled in to watch the action.

Perry recently opened up about the romance during the premiere of Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour. “I am very in love,” she said. Reflecting on her relationship with Trudeau, the singer added, “Because I’m a little bit like a rainbow kite … sometimes I need to be anchored. So, to have that anchor finally makes me feel really whole now.”
