Savannah Guthrie Tears Up Discussing Return to Today with ‘Best Friend’ Jenna Bush Hager

Savannah Guthrie, whose 84-year-old mother disappeared a few months ago, got emotional on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle while discussing her return to the Today show. She told Jenna Bush Hager about the emotional distress of her mother being missing for four months: “It’s really hard to come back. I’ve been trying so hard to hold it together, and I promise I will.”

It’s difficult for Savannah to see “best friend” Jenna at work each day amid Nancy’s disappearance

Nancy Guthrie, mother of television journalist Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on the night of January 31 after arriving home from dining with family in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, Arizona. Surveillance footage from her home showed a masked individual, and authorities discovered her blood at the location.

Savannah took a nearly two-month absence from the Today show following her mother’s disappearance and returned to the show on April 6, as per PBS.

On June 8, Savannah, who stepped in for Sheinelle Jones during the episode as Jones was off that day, thanked her TODAY colleagues for their support. She said, “I’m happy to be back. It’s like the two hours of my day — it’s not that I’m not thinking about it, because I am — but it’s something to do. It brings me a lot of joy to be with everybody. But no, it’s not easy.”

“It’s a little respite,” the journalist said, adding, “And you are my family. I don’t think if I had any other kind of job I would’ve even tried to come back. I just felt like, what else should I do? And my mom would’ve said the same, like, ‘Honey, just keep going, just keep going.’ And so, I am.”

Savannah said she had to keep it together to do the job, noting how difficult it would be while speaking with Jenna on the fourth hour. The 54-year-old journalist explained, “It’s hard when you’re with your best friend to not be real. You’ve asked me before if I’m ready. But I couldn’t look at you in this kind of setting where we talk about life and not tell the truth about my life.”

Savannah added, “We still need everybody’s prayers. We still wish somebody would call and say what they know.” According to the BBC, the family is offering a $1 million reward for information. The FBI is also offering a $100,000 reward and urging anyone with any information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
