As America approaches its 250th anniversary on July 4, the hosts of The View found themselves divided over a recent poll. The poll indicates that “two out of three Republicans are proud to be an American, but fewer than one in five Democrats feel the same,” according to The Wrap.
The View’s Ana Navarro says many Americans struggle with feeling “ashamed” of the government
According to polling conducted by Elon University and published on June 2, among self-described Democrats, 18 percent said they felt “proud,” and 17 percent said they felt “grateful” when asked about their feelings toward the country. On the other hand, 68 percent of Republican voters said they felt “proud” to be American, while 19 percent said they felt “grateful.”
In response to the poll, Ana Navarro said during a June 5 episode of The View that she went through a civil war, fled communism, and lives in a South Florida community filled with people who have escaped political turmoil and oppression, adding that she will never take for granted the freedom, refuge, and opportunities the country has given her and many other immigrants.
“But I think you can separate feeling proud of America, feeling proud of being an American, feeling proud of the exceptionalism and resilience of this country, and feeling really ashamed and embarrassed and horrified by the American government right now,” she explained.
Pointing to the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, Navarro said, “I never thought in my entire life I would see U.S. citizens killed for exercising their right to protest,” she said. Along with that, she added, “So yes! Yes, damn it! I am ashamed of that. But I will never stop being proud of being an American.”
Host Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former White House director of strategic communications in President Trump’s first administration, quickly agreed, saying that being proud to be American does not require overlooking the country’s significant flaws.
Griffin concluded by saying, “What makes us so unique, and one of the things that makes me love this country so much, is we’re unlike any other country on earth in that we are racially, religiously, and socioeconomically incredibly diverse. There’s no country on earth that has that.”
