As The Late Show with Stephen Colbert host prepares for the last episode of the show, he tells PEOPLE about his “No fear” stance on the Donald Trump administration.
While CBS claimed that the show’s cancellation was “purely a financial decision,” it is widely speculated that it was done to pacify Trump and earn his approval for an impending corporate merger.
Stephen Colbert has “no fear” of this administration but wants Trump to “pick his battles”
Colbert added that he had no illusions about any long-term impacts of the show’s cancellation. However, he will miss the camaraderie he enjoyed with his colleagues, who shared the excruciating journey of putting up a quality show every day.
However, on Trump’s alleged interference in CBS and its parent company Paramount, Colbert declared, “[Trump] needs to know how to pick his battles, metaphorically and literally.”
Colbert has been America’s mainstay on daily television since 1997, when he starred on The Daily Show. The host has acted as a sharp critic of the Trump regime since the show began in 2015. The cancellation goes against ordinary logic, as The Late Show had amassed the highest ratings in the late-night segment. CBS, however, has stated that the cancellation was “not related in any way to the show’s performance, content, or other matters happening at Paramount.”
The unexpected cancellation came shortly after Colbert attacked Paramount in his show, criticizing them for paying a whopping $16 million settlement to the Trump administration over a 60 Minutes interview dispute—a move Colbert openly said was “a big fat bribe” to ease Paramount’s Skydance deal that required Trump’s approval.
As he prepares for the finale to be aired on May 21, Colbert asserts, “I’ll never stop caring about my country. I’m a perfectly fine fan of myself, and I am not of the opinion that if my voice is missing from the national conversation, the republic will turn away.”
