Freeform Orders Marvel’s ‘Cloak and Dagger’ To Series

The recently rebranded cable network Freeform is jumping head first into the Marvel Universe!

According to Variety, Freeform (which was formerly ABC Family) has given a surprise straight-to-series order for Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger. And it happened so quickly that the Cloak and Dagger series doesn’t even have a writer attached to it yet!

Way back in 1982, Cloak and Dagger first appeared in the Spectacular Spider-Man series by Bill Mantlo and artist Ed Hannigan. Cloak had the power to control a portal to the dark dimension while Dagger’s body produced light, which she used to produce “light daggers” from her hands and she was also able to generate light to feed Cloak’s darkness. It was later revealed that Dagger was Tandy Brown, a teenage runaway who left her privileged life behind while Cloak was Tyrone Johnson, a stuttering kid from an impoverished background. Tyrone recovered Tandy’s purse from a thief and they became friends before they were experimented on by drug dealers which unleashed their powers.

The Freeform Cloak and Dagger series will keep both Tyrone and Tandy as teenagers, while focusing on their “interracial superhero love story.” While the characters eventually went the romance route in the comics, they were platonic partners for most of their existence.

There’s currently no firm date for Cloak and Dagger to begin airing on Freeform, but it’s believed that this show could be positioned as a companion series to Shadowhunters.
