Chelsea Prepare to Make £40 Million Bid For Everton’s John Stones

Chelsea are reportedly readying a mammoth bid for Everton defender John Stones, with the club considering offering £40 million in order to acquire the 21-year-old.

If the deal were to be accepted by the Merseyside club it would make Stones the most expensive defender in English football, though considering they have already rejected Chelsea three times – the last offer made was for £30 million – it seems that they want to keep a hold of the youngster no matter the amount of money thrown in their direction.

Stones has earned four international caps during his career, and has obviously done enough to convince manager Jose Mourinho that he is worth such a seemingly absurd price tag. Considering that Chelsea have had a poor start to the season in terms of their defence, having just suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, some fans are concerned that this new £40 million offer is a panic bid in order to swiftly bulk up their back line.

Regardless of the reasoning, Everton will surely want to put some major consideration into Chelsea’s bid if they decide to follow through with it. With the London outfit now having doubled their initial £20 million bid, it’s reasonable to assume that this will be Everton’s last chance to cash in on Stones, with Chelsea unlikely to follow through with a fifth bid.
