Lollapalooza 2014: Courtney Barnett on Recording Her First Album: “It’s New and Fresh and Exciting”

Courtney Barnett, the talented Australian songwriter from Melbourne, made an appearance at this year’s Lollapalooza music festival and had a bit to share about her upcoming album, which will serve as her first full-length musical endeavor.

“It was cool to work on a full album as opposed to the two EPs we kind of recorded in a very staggered way over two years, when I had enough money to do it, or when I got enough money from the Australian government to fund studio time,” Barnett told Billboard backstage at the festival.

“So this time we went into the studio and spent ten days and did it, but it was nice after touring for so long to go and create something new,” she added. “Not that touring isn’t fun, and not that playing the songs isn’t fun, but it’s like a different part of your brain is working to do different things, so it’s new and fresh and exciting.”

Barnett is best known for her work on the song “Avant Gardener,” which has proven to be a popular track for those of us here in the United States. Here’s to hoping her upcoming album is filled with similarly great songs.
