Marvel Announces New Female Thor Ongoing Series

When Marvel Comics teased an announcement that would be made on “The View,” several comic book fans predicted that Thor’s newfound sister, Angela would be getting her own series. But I don’t think that anyone would have predicted this.

Thor writer Jason Aaron is teaming up with artist Russell Dauterman (Cyclops).for a relaunch of Thor in which the title character is a woman. For a few months, Marvel has teased that the original Thor will be judged unworthy to hold Mjölnir, the Hammer of Thor. Now, it appears that someone new has been chosen to carry that name into battle.

In a statement, Aaron said “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

Marvel editor Wil Moss added that “this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!”

Well, then… Marvel’s just gonna have to let Chris Hemsworth out of his contract for Thor 3 and Avengers 3.

Marvel can scream up and down that this is a permanent change for Thor, but its publication history suggests that this is a temporary status quo that will be reversed long before the next Thor solo movie comes out in theaters. Although my personal guess is that the classic Thor will be back just in time for Avengers: Age of Ultron’s release date next May.

The new Thor series will likely debut later this year.
