HBO & BBC Team Up For ‘The Casual Vacancy’ Miniseries

In 2012, J.K. Rowling’s novel, The Casual Vacancy kicked off the author’s post-Harry Potter phase. Near the end of that year, BBC picked up the rights to adapt “The Casual Vacancy” for television. And while the project hasn’t been filmed yet, “The Casual Vacancy” just got a major upgrade.

Deadline is reporting that HBO has joined “The Casual Vacancy” as a co-producer; which means that the project will likely have additional funding and better access to big name stars than it would have otherwise had. HBO is also likely to air the miniseries in the United States.

“The Casual Vacancy” is set in Pagford, an English village rife with conflict between the rich and the poor, children and their parents, teachers and their students and even between husbands and wives.

Sarah Phelps (“EastEnders”) wrote the three part adaptation of “The Casual Vacancy” with Jonny Campbell slated to direct the miniseries. Production is expected to begin this summer in England.
