Tim Allen and Kat Dennings just shared a major update for Shifting Gears Season 3. The sitcom, originally released in 2025, is expected to return with its next installment soon, and the cast and crew all got together to announce its release date.
In a new video shared online, Allen is seen calling his fellow cast members together, saying, “Everybody in the door, let’s go. Everybody, let’s go. Move it down here, everybody. We’ve got our Season 3 official premiere date.”
The screen then shifted to show that ABC‘s comedy series returns to the screens with its third season on Wednesday, January 6, 2027.
What to expect when Shifting Gears returns for Season 3
Shifting Gears Season 3 will kick off in January at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC with a two-episode premiere.
The original story features Allen as Matt Parker, the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. His life gets turned upside down when his estranged and recently divorced daughter Riley (played by Dennings) and her kids move into his house.
Following Season 2’s finale cliffhanger—in which Matt and his traveling ex, Eve (played by Jenna Elfman), went on an impulsive trip together to Barcelona—Matt and Eve’s relationship continues.
This upcoming installment is expected to see Allen and Dennings return alongside Seann William Scott (as Gabriel, a technician at Matt’s shop who has a crush on Riley), Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (as Stitch, a technician at Matt’s shop who specializes in seats and interiors), Maxwell Simkins (as Carter, Riley’s son), and Barrett Margolis (as Georgia, Riley’s daughter).
One major piece of news about this season is that it will feature a 2 Broke Girls reunion for Dennings: Beth Behrs, who starred alongside Dennings in the sitcom, will guest star as Dr. Johnson. She will play an ER doctor who treats Riley for a back injury.
Shifting Gears Season 3 will premiere on ABC on January 6 and will be available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
