Wolverine could be getting a solo movie separate from the X-Men films. The latest report has sparked questions about who could direct the project and whether Hugh Jackman might return.
Scooper @MyTimeToShineH shared the update on X and wrote, “Not only is a solo movie in development, but an A-list director is attached to the project.” The insider has not named the filmmaker or shared story details.
Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine in several films, most recently 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. A solo project could provide the mutant with a narrative beyond the X-Men team. However, it is unclear whether Jackman will return or if Marvel will cast someone new.
What We Know About the Rumored Wolverine Solo Movie?
Joe Russo has previously expressed interest in working on Wolverine. On the 2021 Lights Camera Barstool podcast, he said, “Wolverine has always been such a special character for me. But I would really love to see him on screen.” Joe later added, “I’d love to take a crack at Wolverine at some point.” While these comments show his interest, they do not confirm his association with the rumored project.
Fans online have also suggested Taylor Sheridan, David Fincher, and Paul Thomas Anderson as possible directors for the rumored Wolverine film. Marvel has not confirmed any filmmaker’s involvement at this point.
Marvel is separately developing an X-Men movie directed by Jake Schreier, scheduled for May 5, 2028. Its announced cast includes Sadie Sink, Kit Connor and Samara Weaving. Marvel has not confirmed whether Wolverine will make an appearance in that film.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for December 18, 2026. Its cast includes former X-Men actors Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden. Avengers: Secret Wars releases on May 7, 2027, but Hugh Jackman’s involvement in either film remains a topic of speculation.
As Marvel has not announced the rumored Wolverine movie or identified its director, the report remains unconfirmed.
