Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have attracted fresh criticism over their public appearances in the U.K. A GB News presenter has accused the couple of overshadowing royal engagements, thereby causing tensions in the royal family.
News presenter accuses Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of ‘overshadowing royal event’
Speaking on the Daily Expresso podcast, GB News presenter Alex Armstrong has questioned the Sussexes’ decision to attend public events in Britain. He noted that these appearances may cause unfair competition between them and other events featuring senior members from the royal family.
“I don’t think anyone wants them here anymore! They’ve burnt their bridges so many times. When the King was in the Senedd, opening Parliament, Harry had to do something. They are always trying to overshadow a royal event. And British people expect, if you’re a royal, which is a really prestigious position to be in… just be quiet and do the job,” Armstrong said.
He also accused the couple of trying to attend and organize events that emulate royal standards – that too, without being working royals. “It seems like they’re trying to do these fake royal engagements – for what? You can’t make it up,” he added. “If they wanted privacy, enjoy your privacy, but stop making a fuss of things if you don’t.”
The tensions between the Sussexes and the Firm began when Harry and Meghan decided to step away from their royal duties in 2020. The pair moved to California following their royal exit. Since then, Prince Harry has been engaged in charitable work, including his involvement in the Invictus games. Meghan, on the other hand, has worked to further their business and media ventures. Six years hence, they are back in the U.K. and attending public events.
The couple have reportedly been spending time in the Cotswolds and made a joint appearance in Nottingham in October. Their lineup of appearances has attracted speculation of whether they are designed to conflict with official royal presences.
Even so, their status remains unchanged. A directive from Chamberlain Lord Richard Benyon has reportedly reiterated that they are not working royals anymore and remain private citizens with charitable interests.
