Nolan wrote and directed the adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, centering on Odysseus and his attempt to reach Ithaca after the Trojan War. His journey home takes him across dangerous waters and into encounters with mythical figures, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and Calypso.
The voyage also puts the king and his fellow soldiers through a series of life-threatening challenges as they struggle to make it back. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, while Tom Holland plays Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway appears as Penelope. The cast also features Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, and Charlize Theron as Calypso, among others.
The film has also received strong reviews from critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 94 percent critics’ score based on 515 reviews, while its audience rating stands at 96 percent. GQ Magazine reported, “The Odyssey is less a classical drama than a creature feature made with the technical precision, dazzling craft and humongous budget Nolan always brings to the table.”
The movie’s theatrical performance has also been substantial. The Odyssey has collected approximately $1.8 billion worldwide. According to Box Office Mojo, this includes $625.5 million from domestic theaters and around $1.1 billion from international markets.
