Rob Lowe looks back on the highs and lows of his Hollywood career in a new Netflix documentary. Rob Lowe: The Outsider explores how the actor found fame at a young age, navigated public scandals, and rebuilt his life after personal struggles.
Directed by Chris Smith, known for Tiger King, the documentary features new interviews with Lowe and people who have known him throughout his career. As the latest trailer shows, it also includes old footage and moments from some of his most famous projects.
During his conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the 62-year-old said the documentary took two years to make. Lowe admitted that he felt both “flattered, but anxious” when Netflix first approached him about telling his story. He also explained that letting viewers see his life in such detail wasn’t an easy decision.

What happens in the Rob Lowe: The Outsider trailer?
The trailer opens with Rob Lowe in his early years in Hollywood. He is asked to leave a message for his older self before the video moves through pictures and clips from his career.
Lowe recalls measuring his life by the movies he made rather than the years that passed. The trailer features scenes from The Outsiders, St. Elmo’s Fire, About Last Night, Wayne’s World, The West Wing, and Parks and Recreation.
Rob Lowe: The Outsider also looks at the difficult parts of his journey. The movie revisits his 1988 sex tape scandal. The controversy became a major part of his public life after it emerged that one of the women in the video was underage.
According to Lowe, the documentary gave him a chance to reflect on the choices that shaped his life. He described the journey as far from simple but said he had achieved more than he once thought possible.
Directed by Chris Smith and executive produced by Marc Gurvitz, Jon Liebman, and Zoe Rogovin, Rob Lowe: The Outsider premieres on Netflix on November 24, 2026.
