King Charles has faced more challenges during his reign than he likely anticipated, according to royal expert Phil Dampier.
Dampier reflected on the royal family’s ongoing controversies and the pressure they have placed on the monarchy.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Dampier discussed the difficulties Charles had encountered since his 2023 coronation.
Dampier acknowledged that succeeding Queen Elizabeth II after her 70-year reign was already a considerable challenge. However, he believed Charles initially handled his duties well before several controversies created additional difficulties.
Dampier pointed to the ongoing tensions involving Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, along with the scandal surrounding Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his past association with Jeffrey Epstein.
“Some of these things have been brewing for years, but I don’t think he could have anticipated that they would have blown up so big,” Dampier said.
Dampier also highlighted the support Charles received from Queen Camilla. He credited Camilla with providing stability and support during challenging times.
Charles also faced renewed scrutiny over Britain’s colonial history during his Caribbean tour.
During a youth rally in the Bahamas, schoolchildren welcomed the King, while nearby protesters demanded reparations and the return of historical artifacts.

An October 29 YouGov poll showed that Charles’ favorability rating had fallen to its lowest level since he became king. According to YouGov, 58% of British adults surveyed viewed him favorably, compared with 70% in September 2022, shortly after he became king.
Despite these developments, Dampier praised the King’s commitment to his responsibilities.
Dampier said the monarch maintained a demanding schedule, regularly reviewed official documents, and devoted considerable time to preparing for royal engagements.
He also stressed the importance of preparing the monarchy for the future, with Prince William next in line to the throne.
While the King Charles royal family scandals continued to attract attention, Dampier maintained that the monarch had demonstrated resilience while navigating the challenges surrounding his reign.
