Michael Mann’s latest brush with firearms came far from a movie set, after a gun accident sent the legendary director to a Los Angeles hospital. The filmmaker sustained a minor leg injury when his weapon accidentally discharged at a local shooting range.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon during target practice at The Range LA. Mann, an experienced target shooter for decades, reportedly tried to holster his firearm when it went off. Emergency crews took him to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

TMZ reported that the incident occurred around 4 p.m. Sources told the outlet that Mann had been practicing at a sanctioned gun range. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers and Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded after reports of a shooting. Police said the victim had no intention of harming himself. They described the incident as a training accident in which Mann accidentally discharged a firearm into his own leg.
The injury appeared minor, and sources characterized it as subcutaneous. Mann’s representative later gave the outlet an update on the director’s condition. “On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered, resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released,” the representative said.
The update offered reassuring news after reports that Mann needed hospital care. His representative confirmed that doctors treated him and prepared to release him. The accident did not appear to involve any deliberate act or serious injury.
The scare came as Mann prepared for Heat 2, his follow-up to the acclaimed 1995 crime thriller Heat. The original film starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The new film revisited the crime saga that became one of Mann’s defining works. Despite decades of shooting experience, a routine moment at the range turned dangerous in seconds.
Mann, known for films including Collateral and The Insider, had no reported life-threatening injuries. The representative’s statement indicated that he expected to leave the hospital following treatment.
