Michael Mann’s decades of filming Hollywood’s most realistic gun scenes just got a little too real. The Heat director is recovering after an accidental discharge at a Los Angeles gun range left him with a minor injury.

Injury update on Michael Mann after accidentally shooting himself at L.A. gun range

Director Michael Mann accidentally shot himself in the left thigh at a Los Angeles gun range on Saturday, according to law enforcement sources who spoke to multiple outlets. The 83-year-old filmmaker was holstering a .45-caliber handgun at a members-only indoor shooting range in West Los Angeles when the weapon discharged. LAPD officers responded around 4 p.m. local time to the 11100 block of Missouri Avenue after reports of shots fired.

Responding officers quickly determined the shooting was entirely accidental. Police confirmed that Mann “had no intention of harming himself” and sustained the injury during a training accident. The LAPD also stated that the filmmaker “accidentally discharged a firearm into his own leg” while at the facility.

Range staff at The Range LA provided immediate medical aid before paramedics arrived at the scene. An ambulance then transported Mann to a local hospital in stable condition. Police described his injury as not life-threatening and confirmed they completed an official injury report following the incident.

Mann’s publicist later provided a statement describing the wound as superficial. The publicist told ABC News that “a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered.” The representative also confirmed that Mann received treatment at the hospital and was being released shortly after.

The Heat director has built a career known for meticulous firearm accuracy in his action sequences. His 1995 crime epic Heat featured one of the most acclaimed shootout scenes in cinema history. He also directed critically praised films like Collateral, The Insider, and most recently Ferrari in 2023.

Mann reportedly visited The Range LA, a well-known members-only facility popular among entertainment industry professionals. The incident remains under standard LAPD review as part of their accidental discharge protocol. No criminal charges or further investigation are expected in connection with the accidental shooting.
