Michael Douglas has offered a rare update on Jack Nicholson’s acting retirement. The actor recently discussed Nicholson’s life away from Hollywood. He offered insight into his current routine and whether he might return to the screen. His remarks come after the Oscar winner spent more than a decade away from feature films.
Douglas discussed Nicholson during an appearance at the Swansea Building Society Arena in Wales on October 26, 2026. He was promoting his memoir, One Helluva Ride. Speaking about his friend, Douglas said, “He’s not working anymore. He’s well. He has disappeared. I know that.”
Nicholson, 89, hasn’t appeared in a feature film since the 2010 romantic comedy How Do You Know, directed by James L. Brooks. Although he never officially announced his retirement, he hasn’t taken on another acting role in the 16 years since the film’s release.

Douglas also reflected on his friendship with Nicholson and revealed they never got the opportunity to work together as co-stars. He said, “I would have liked to have acted with Jack.” The actor then reassured fans about Nicholson’s condition, revealing that they still keep in touch. Douglas said, “I still see him, but he is fine.”
He also described how Nicholson spends his time away from Hollywood. The actor added, “He is up there by his house and walking around in his slippers.” Douglas acknowledged that stepping away from work was understandable, saying, “It happens. He deserves it. I understand.” He further pointed out that Nicholson is a few years older than him, making his decision easier to understand.
The two stars have a connection through the 1975 drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which Douglas produced. The film earned Nicholson his first Academy Award for Best Actor and became one of the defining performances of his career.
Nicholson has made only a handful of public appearances in recent years. He notably attended the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary special in February 2025.
