Chris Pratt opened up about his entrance into Hollywood, crediting one specific actress for making it happen. He said that before his acting career, he used to live in a van and wait tables at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. During that time, he came across an actress, and she asked him whether he could act, which ultimately paved the way to his acting career.
How Rae Dawn Chong cast Chris Pratt in his first movie, Cursed Part 3
Pratt took to X (formerly Twitter) to share how he got cast in his first movie. He said that once Rae Dawn Chong came to a restaurant he worked for, he approached her and asked, “Hey, you’re a movie star! What are you doing here?”
He was then immediately asked whether he could act, and he expressed enthusiasm to be cast in a movie. The MCU actor revealed that Chong asked for his phone number, but at that time he didn’t have one. Therefore, he just gave his friend Mike’s number to her. Some days later, Mike told Pratt that he did receive a call from someone, which left the latter shocked.
Pratt added, “I called her back, and sure enough, she was serious. I drove over to pick up the script, went back to Mike’s house, and read all 120 pages three times in a row. First script I’d ever read. My character’s name was Devon, and I remember thinking, “Sweet! I could totally play a Devon!” He said that he prepared “every line” and expression for the audition, which turned out well; Chong offered him a role.
The actor mentioned that he then asked the director whether they were shooting in Hawaii, but learned that they would do it in Los Angeles. “I had about $60 to my name, a bag of clothes, and some rollerblades. Then Rae told me they’d fly me out. And I remember thinking right then and there, my life just changed forever. I’m going to be an actor,” he said.
Pratt further shared that this is how his door to Hollywood opened through Cursed Part 3. He expressed his gratitude to Chong for offering him this opportunity at a time when he worked at a shrimp restaurant. “Everybody starts somewhere, and this is where it all began for me,” he concluded.
