Scrubs Just Brought Back [Spoiler] With a Heartbreaking Twist

Scrubs just brought back a fan-favorite character, and the reason will break your heart. Season 2’s Halloween episode revealed a devastating new reality for one of Sacred Heart’s most beloved faces that no amount of sarcasm can fix.

Dr. Perry Cox returns to Scrubs in Season 2

Wednesday’s Halloween episode of Scrubs brought John C. McGinley back as Dr. Perry Cox for the first time since the two-episode Season 2 premiere, as reported by TVLine.

The revival’s sixth episode revealed Cox has taken a job as a concierge doctor to Rick Fabian (Kurt Fuller), the detached CEO of a private aviation company. Cox tells J.D. he did not return to medicine out of passion but out of financial necessity.

Despite having health insurance, Cox finds himself buried under medical bills. His planned retirement has become financially impossible. “You thought I wanted to spend my retirement working?” he asks J.D. “I had so many plans for my golden years, but all those plans are gone and I did everything I was supposed to do and then I got sick.”

Cox still gets a moment to channel his old self during a Code Blue in the administrative wing. After the patient, an organ donor, dies, Cox demands Rick show gratitude for receiving her kidney. McGinley will return again for the December 9 season finale alongside guest star Amy Poehler.

Meanwhile, J.D. begins to move on from his failed situation with Charlie. He grows closer to Cassie, Sacred Heart’s new hospital administrator, played by Stephanie Koenig. Cassie has already shut down Elliot’s mobile clinic, setting up fresh tension between the exes. Next week’s episode will also introduce their son Ollie for the first time on screen.

The Halloween festivities delivered lighter moments as well. J.D. fantasized about being Mary Poppins alongside an animated Rowdy. Turk dressed as Bobby Brown and performed dance moves for one of Carla’s pediatric patients, nodding to his iconic “Poison” dance from the original run.
