Tom Hanks’ 27-Year-Old Stephen King Hit Is a Free Streaming Sensation

Decades after its original release, an acclaimed Hollywood drama starring Tom Hanks is attracting viewers again through a free streaming platform. The Stephen King adaptation has also earned widespread appreciation from audiences and received much recognition during awards season.

The Green Mile continues to top Tubi’s free streaming chart

The Green Mile currently leads Tubi’s top 10 titles, according to Flix Patrol. It sits ahead of Psycho Side Chick, Friday the 13th, Slam Dunk Ernest, Forrest Gump, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Death Sentence and Rookie of the Year.

The film stars Tom Hanks and adapts Stephen King’s 1996 novel of the same name. Frank Darabont wrote and directed the movie, which follows prison guards working on death row during the 1930s.

Michael Clarke Duncan plays John Coffey, an inmate whose extraordinary and strange abilities challenge the guards’ understanding of life, death, and justice. Tom Hanks potrays Paul Edgecomb, a kind-hearted and understadning prison guard.

The Green Mile is an emotional and hard-hitting movie, with Duncan delivering a performance that sticks with viewers. Still, the nearly three-hour drama isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Its weighty themes and slow-burning pace may test the patience of anyone craving a more action-packed movie.

The film also made its mark at the Oscars, landing four nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Duncan, Best Sound, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Duncan brought humanity and tenderness to a character confronting a tragic end, making his portrayal one of the movie’s best performances. The Green Mile holds a 78% critics’ score and an impressive 94% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. IMDb users rate the drama 8.6 out of 10.

With a reported $60 million production budget, The Green Mile pulled in approximately $286 million at the global box office (via Box Office Mojo). Castle Rock Entertainment produced the drama, while Warner Bros. handled its release. The film’s worldwide earnings comfortably surpassed its production costs, making it a commercial success.
