Hasan Piker Sues CNN’s Scott Jennings for $72.5M Over Alleged Defamation

Hasan Piker has taken legal action against CNN commentator Scott Jennings, filing a $72.5 million defamation lawsuit. It accuses the conservative pundit of twisting the streamer’s words to falsely suggest he endorsed racial violence against Black Americans.

Piker lodged the 38-page complaint in federal court in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. The suit targets an August 11 episode of The Scott Jennings Show, where the CNN contributor aired a spliced compilation of Piker’s streams. One clip carried an on-screen caption attributing the line “Let’s go back to a better time when lynchings were happening” to Piker. Jennings then told Black voters to pay attention and accused Piker of pushing “the Piker plan of returning our country to lynchings.”

The streamer’s legal team counters that the video was manipulated. They say the original October 2024 Twitch broadcast shows Piker sarcastically riffing on a conservative commentator’s remarks. According to the complaint, the edited version cut the words “He said,” Piker’s laughter, and the surrounding commentary, manufacturing the impression that Hasan Piker voiced his own support for lynchings rather than mocking someone else’s position.

The lawsuit pulls no punches about Jennings’ conduct: “Mr. Jennings did not merely mischaracterize something Mr. Piker said,” the complaint states. “He took a false, fabricated, and manipulated video of Mr. Piker, added a made-up quotation that Mr. Piker never uttered, and then made accusations that went beyond even what the manipulated footage purported to show.”

The suit also claims the comments harmed Piker’s reputation and his income from streaming, advertising, and sponsorships. The edited clips had circulated days before Jennings’ segment through the National Republican Senatorial Committee, seemingly aimed at damaging Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who has campaigned alongside Piker.

Snopes already weighed in on Piker’s side, concluding after a full review that Jennings falsely claimed Piker favored reviving lynchings. Piker’s attorneys sent Jennings a retraction demand on August 31 and say they got no substantive reply.
