Aaron Sorkin Worries He’s Not a Talented Director After The Social Reckoning Bombs

Aaron Sorkin had some high expectations for The Social Reckoning. Unfortunately, as the movie bombed at the box office, the American screenwriter reflected harshly on his worth.

Sorkin recently appeared on The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast. Speaking about his latest project, the 65-year-old said he feels like a newbie when it comes to directing a movie. Sorkin also admitted there were many things he didn’t know. As a result, the creator of The West Wing felt he wasn’t a talented filmmaker.

Sorkin said, “From time to time, I get to speak with screenwriting students, and I’ll be asked, ‘Is screenwriting something that can be taught?’ And the answer is, ‘There are parts of screenwriting – important parts – that can be taught and can be learned, but there are parts that can’t be.'”

He continued, “And those parts that can’t be? That’s usually what we mean when we use the word ‘talent.’ I’m very worried that the parts of directing that I’m not good at are those parts that you can’t learn.”

How much money has Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning made at the box office?

The Social Reckoning hit the theaters on October 9, 2026. It earned a worldwide box office total of $16,891,831, according to The Numbers. In its opening weekend, the feature earned more than $5 million, accounting for 55% of its total gross. Critics gave the film a 54% rating on Tomatometer and audiences a 71% score on Popcornmeter via Rotten Tomatoes. On IMDb, it received a 6.7 out of 10.

The Aaron Sorkin-directed film follows the real-life whistleblower leaks known as the Facebook Files. The synopsis for the biographical drama, per IMDb, reads, “Follows Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.”

The director himself wrote the screenplay for the legal docudrama. The cast for The Social Reckoning features Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, Jeremy Strong, Gbenga Akinnagbe, and others.
