Elon Musk’s documentary is heading to digital platforms earlier than expected. It explores the X CEO’s journey and examines the controversies surrounding his public image. The move comes after a limited theatrical run and modest box office earnings.
Directed by Alex Gibney, Musk will arrive on VOD platforms on November 6, 2026. The four-hour documentary will be available to rent or buy on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and other digital services. The film will continue playing in theaters until its digital release, with further theatrical screenings also possible.
Alex Gibney takes a closer look at Elon Musk’s rise and controversies
Musk examines the life and influence of the billionaire entrepreneur, offering a closer look at the person behind his public reputation. The documentary describes itself as “An unflinching look at Earth’s most unchecked man.”
The project takes an investigative approach to Musk’s rise as an inventor-entrepreneur, whose business decisions and public activities continue to attract attention. Rather than focusing solely on his business achievements, the documentary examines the broader implications of his position.
Despite its extensive subject matter, Musk struggled to attract audiences during its theatrical release. The documentary earned approximately $646,288 at the domestic box office during its theatrical run, which began on October 9 and lasted around three weeks. It opened in four theaters before expanding to 472 theaters the following week.
Alex Gibney directed the documentary and co-wrote it with Michael J. Palmer. He also produced the film alongside Jessie Deeter, Erin Edeiken, Zhang Xin, Joey Marra, Nick Shumaker, Jessica Grimshaw, Dana O’Keefe, Ronan Farrow, and Lawrence Wright.
Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman reviewed Musk and highlighted, “Once you start piecing together Musk’s scandals and cut corners and slipshod management, you see that he’s a creator of mirages who promises more than he delivers.”
The upcoming VOD release will give the documentary another opportunity to reach viewers who missed its theatrical screenings.
