Sacha Baron Cohen has found an unusual way to promote his new movie. In a newly released video, the actor dressed up as the iconic character Ali G and made a surprising request to fans who visit the theater to see the movie.
Through a video shared on the official Ali G X account, Cohen appeared as the character promoting his movie Ali G: Who Iz I? He said, “Easy now, check it out, my new film, Ali G: Who Iz I?, is out right now in the cinemas. So get down there and film it and stick it up on YouTube so no one else has to buy a ticket. Sharing is caring, aight?”
This isn’t the first time Cohen has used an unconventional promotional stunt for the movie. Before its theatrical release, the actor dressed up as his Borat character to stage a mock “boycott” of the film. Moreover, the movie received a lot of criticism for portraying harmful racial stereotypes.
What is Sacha Baron Cohen’s new Ali G movie about?
Ali G: Who Iz I? is a sequel to the 2002 comedy Ali G Indahouse. The movie brings back Cohen as the fictional rapper in his directorial debut.
The official synopsis reads, “After twenty years spent ‘chillin’, tokin’ and bonin’, Ali G is shocked to discover that his long-term girlfriend, Julie, is eight months pregnant. Faced with an extra mouth to feed, he gets off his batty and heads to America to reclaim his former glory… but soon encounters adversaries who will ultimately threaten his and his child’s very existence.”
Alongside Cohen, Morgana Robinson will portray Julie, Ali G’s girlfriend from the 2002 movie, which was previously played by Kellie Bright. Stewart Rodeheaver also features in the movie as himself. Cohen also served as the producer of the movie, with Petr Jákl as executive producer.
As of now, the movie has received a 50% Tomatometer score from 20 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It is playing in theaters now.
