Selma Blair reportedly used alcohol to mask MS symptoms
Selma Blair recently appeared on a new episode of The Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show, where she opened up about her struggles with alcohol. During the conversation, the actress reportedly revealed that she used alcohol to mask her multiple sclerosis symptoms.
Blair said, “It’s wild the times that I’ve gone, even as a very young girl, to alcohol. I was never someone that liked drugs. I was just afraid of them, you know. I was never someone that could tolerate opiates, thank God. Like vomit, vomit, vomit, you know, especially with all my teeth stuff.”
The actress continued, “But then, you know, one glass isn’t enough. Two glasses isn’t great. Three is better. Four is horrible.”
The 54-year-old actress went on to explain that while she doesn’t live a completely sober lifestyle, she knows drinking is something she can’t do. However, she admitted, “wish I could be someone that could have two glasses of wine and just be flirty and fun and listen better.”
Selma Blair has been candid about her battle with alcohol addiction and her road to recovery. In her memoir, Mean Baby, the A Dirty Shame actress revealed that she first drank alcohol when she was only 7. As she grew older, alcohol became a way for her to cope with difficult feelings and find temporary comfort.
The 54-year-old eventually quit drinking in 2016 following a frightening and humiliating incident on a flight. She was traveling with her 4-year-old son, Arthur, and his father when alcohol and medication caused her to pass out. The incident ultimately led to her being removed from the plane.
