Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos Face Health Scare Over New Family Member

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos delay puppy adoption as their new dog receives parasite treatment

The couple first shared news of their plans to adopt a Shih Tzu puppy on October 12. The process has since been delayed due to a health concern. Speaking to People at the Broadway opening night for Other Desert Cities on October 18, Ripa said, “We don’t have him yet because he had a little bit of a health issue.” Consuelos clarified, “A parasite. So they’re treating it, and then he’s going to come.”

Despite the delay, Consuelos remains hopeful that their new dog will come home soon. The puppy was originally named Lucas before the couple changed his name to Javi. He will join Lena, their Maltese-Shih Tzu mix, whom they adopted in 2020. Ripa also shared a video of Lena meeting Javi backstage on Instagram. She captioned the clip, “When Lena Met Javi (Lucas).”

The couple’s decision to adopt another dog comes after the loss of their beloved pet Chewie, who died in February 2025 at age 17. During the October 13 episode, Ripa said, “I kept thinking about how much Javi reminded me of Chewie. And I was thinking, ‘Oh, I bet Chewie sent Javi here for us.”

She continued, “My beloved dog, who I will never get over and mourn for the rest of my life, sent this little dog here. Because I really decided I was only going to get a dog, and I didn’t really care about the breed, but I wanted a dog that looked exactly like Lena.”
