Zohran Mamdani has been making headlines over several issues in New York City. Now, Kim Petras has praised the mayor after he backed a plan to phase out the city’s horse-carriage industry.
Kim Petras praises Zohran Mamdani over New York City’s horse-carriage ban
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has backed a deal to phase out the horse-carriage industry, and no one seems happier about it than German pop star Kim Petras. On Tuesday, October 13, Petras reacted to the news by reposting an announcement from POLITICO reporter Chris Sommerfeldt.
As per Paste Magazine, the post read, “Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have reached a deal to abolish NYC’s horse carriage industry — a critical breakthrough in a decades-long, politically fraught effort to ban the tourist attraction.” Petras reacted, writing, “Zohran, I can finally send you Detour.”
For context, the singer’s joke comes nearly a year after an Interview magazine story revealed that Mamdani was a huge Kim Petras fan. The “Unholy” singer posted a screenshot of Mamdani’s interview and wrote, “Zohran Mamdani I am willing to privately send you my new album if we can get the horse carriages banned from Central Park.”
Horse-drawn carriages have long been a controversial issue in New York City, where animal rights advocates argue that owners mistreat and abuse the horses. During his election campaign, the 34-year-old presented himself as a friend of labor unions and avoided promising a complete ban on the practice. Instead, he proposed visiting stables and forming a panel to assess the horses’ health if elected mayor.
The issue resurfaced this summer when an 18-year-old tourist died while trying to save his mother after a spooked horse threw her from a carriage. Now, Zohran Mamdani has announced his support for a bill that would make horse-drawn carriages illegal in the city starting in June 2028.
