Tom Selleck’s Blue Bloods Return on Boston Blue Isn’t Ruled Out

Tom Selleck could still return as Frank Reagan in the Boston Blue spin-off. The new CBS series has already brought back several familiar Blue Bloods characters. Now, its showrunners have explained what would need to happen for Selleck to reprise his role.

Boston Blue creators want Tom Selleck back for the ‘right’ story

Following the conclusion of Blue Bloods, CBS expanded on Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan, with Boston Blue. The spin-off has already welcomed several characters from the original series, but Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan has yet to make an appearance.

In an interview with ScreenRant, showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier addressed the possibility of bringing Selleck back. Margolis said that having Selleck return remains something the creative team would like to see. “It remains wish fulfillment on our part. We would love to have Tom, and to get to write for Tom would be a dream come true.”

However, he explained that the writers would first need to find a story that naturally places Frank within the world of Boston Blue. “Obviously, it’s always going to come down to what’s the right story to tell, and does it make sense to have Frank there for the character?”

Margolis also acknowledged Selleck’s busy schedule while reiterating that the team continues to consider ways of making a potential appearance work. The goal, he suggested, is to find an organic reason for Frank to become part of the new series rather than simply bringing him back as a familiar face.

Sonnier expressed a similar position. He emphasized that the writers do not want Frank’s return to happen merely for the sake of a Blue Bloods connection. “It’s got to be the right story, though. That’s sort of the thing is we don’t ever want to do it just for the sake of doing it,” Sonnier said. He added that the right storyline could eventually create an opportunity, calling it an episode the writers could only “dream” of creating.

Boston Blue has already featured several Blue Bloods stars in their original roles. Bridget Moynahan, Marisa Ramirez, Len Cariou, and Will Hochman have all returned, while Will Estes is also expected to appear during Season 2.

Wahlberg leads the spin-off alongside Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, and Maggie Lawson, among others. For now, Frank Reagan’s return remains unconfirmed, but the showrunners have made clear that they have not closed the door on Selleck appearing.
