Prince Harry may be working on a tribute to Princess Diana, and one royal expert says it could cost him his relationship with Prince William. The 30th anniversary of Diana’s death is still a year away. However, with talks of Harry’s documentary stirring debate, the question now is how William might take it.
Prince Harry risks ‘worsening’ Prince William divide with Diana memoir, per expert
Princess Diana died in a car accident in 1997, aged 36. Prince Harry was 12, and Prince William was 15 at the time. Now, royal editor Emily Ferguson of the Daily Express said in a podcast that a new film on Diana “risks worsening relations” between the brothers. She pointed to William’s remarks after the 20th-anniversary documentary, in which both men appeared. He said then, “we won’t be doing this again, we won’t speak as openly or publicly about her again.”
Ferguson noted that the brothers were on better terms back then. She believes another Harry-led project would be “completely against William.” She also said William is likely to mark the date privately with his family. Other reports suggest he will not join any new documentary.
Columnist Carole Malone was more critical. She said it would not be a “good look” for Harry. A tribute might begin as a tribute, she argued, but “it would end up being about him, it would be about his gripes regarding his mother and how she was treated.” She also said that even if the proceeds went to charity, people might still ask him to move on.
The expert also noted that Harry has long criticized the press intrusion Diana faced. While William “has put it to rest, and he’s getting on with his life,” Harry, on the other hand, “will not let anything rest where his mother’s concerned.” For now, there are no clear signs of a thaw between the estranged brothers.
