Recent reports have suggested that viewers thought Madonna‘s chaotic VMAs stunt was the result of a bet. Marking her first MTV Awards ceremony appearance in 23 years, the pop icon’s return was meant to be historic. Instead, it quickly made the news as the evening’s biggest talking point, but not for the expected reasons.
Source suggests Madonna’s VMAs appearance has sparked a theory among her fans and friends
With how “zany” Madonna’s VMAs appearance was, many believe that she made a bet with her inner circle to push the outrage to the limit. The Material Girl hitmaker launched the 2026 show at LA’s Peacock Theater with an eight-minute set alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. She later dominated the night with seven wins, including Artist of the Year.
However, the Queen of Pop’s acceptance speech was all over the place. During her Best Dance win for the short film Confessions II, Madonna said that she was “unclear” about what she had actually won for, before Charli and Troye Sivan explained it to her. After the Brat hitmaker stepped in to clarify, the 68-year-old said that Charli and Sivan were “standing so far away” and told them to “get over here,” adding there was “safety in numbers.”
One insider told RadarOnline, “By the end of the night, people were asking whether Madonna had made some kind of bet with her friends to see just how zany she could make her appearance. That has become the theory, because each time she appeared she seemed determined to top whatever she’d done previously.”
The source further continued, “It’s Madonna, so nobody expects a boring acceptance speech. But even by her standards, there were moments when people were wondering what on earth she was going to say next.”
In her address, Madonna also thanked filmmakers David Toro and Solomon Chase before touching on another moment that left the audience puzzled. She took off her leather jacket and then pretended to yank “this thing out of my a**,” saying it had “been in there all night.” Later, in a separate speech, the singer called out Carpenter’s team for taking days to get back to her about working together.
