Whalefall: Austin Abrams Movie’s Popcorn Bucket Gives Audience Members Their Own Whale

Following Hollywood’s trend of wild theater concessions, Regal is bringing the sea’s apex predator right to the concession stand. Ahead of the theatrical debut of Whalefall, starring Austin Abrams, the cinema chain has unveiled an exclusive collectible popcorn bucket modeled after the film’s monstrous creature.

Regal teased the custom merchandise on social media, posting, “Whale, whale, whale…. look at what’s swimming soon to Regal.”

The whale-shaped container features a mini diver figure attached to its side and an opening along the whale’s back for popcorn retrieval. The limited-edition item hits select Regal locations on Oct. 15, one day prior to the film’s nationwide release. Advance tickets for Whalefall are already available for purchase.

What is the Whalefall movie about?

Directed by Brian Duffield, Whalefall adapts Daniel Kraus’ acclaimed 2023 novel of the same name. Abrams stars as Jay Gardiner, a young scuba diver who plunges into the Pacific Ocean near Monastery Beach along California’s Central Coast to locate the remains of his deceased father, Mitt Gardiner.

During the dive, Jay witnesses an underwater battle between a giant squid and an 80-foot sperm whale. The whale accidentally swallows Jay whole, trapping him inside its dark digestive system with only one hour of oxygen remaining in his tank.

Jay must then rely on the diving and survival knowledge taught to him by his father as he searches for a way out. His situation becomes increasingly dangerous as he deals with the whale’s digestive system while his oxygen supply continues to fall.

The film adapts Kraus’ story of survival while also exploring the strained relationship between Jay and his father. The underwater setting and the whale’s interior remain the central environment for Jay’s struggle as he attempts to survive the encounter and return to the surface.

Josh Brolin plays Mitt Gardiner (Jay’s father) in supporting sequences, leading an ensemble cast that includes Elisabeth Shue, Jane Levy, Emily Rudd, and John Ortiz.

Whalefall is scheduled to hit the theaters on Friday, Oct. 16, 2026.
