Star Wars Rumor Claims X-Men Writer’s New Trilogy Has Found Its Director

The upcoming Star Wars trilogy, penned by X-Men writer, may have received a promising update. A new rumor claims that the new project is ramping up production.

Entertainment journalist Caleb Williams posted on X, “A director has been found for the new #StarWars trilogy by screenwriter Simon Kinberg. Kinberg wasn’t considered.” The scooper did not specifically say which director will helm the project.

Williams further claimed, “Production is picking up steam FAST and could begin filming as early as next year.” However, there has been no official confirmation of the reported director or production timeline.

Kinberg is best known for writing several films in the X-Men film franchise. These include X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix. Other popular movies he has penned include Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes, and Fantastic Four.

As a producer, Kinberg’s reputed credits include Elysium, Cinderella, Deadpool, Logan, and A Haunting in Venice, among others. He also produced Ridley Scott’s The Martian, starring Matt Damon, which earned the film an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Why this rumored hire could be a major milestone for the new trilogy

The upcoming Star Wars trilogy was first announced in 2024. As reported by Variety, Lucasfilm had begun developing the project with Simon Kinberg as screenwriter. Since then, there have been very few updates on the production. The latest rumor, if accurate, would indicate that the project has moved further into development.

The upcoming trilogy will reportedly take place after the events of the Skywalker Saga, the franchise’s original nine chapters. At this moment, further details remain under wraps.

For now, fans are looking forward to the franchise’s upcoming installment, Star Wars: Starfighter. This standalone adventure stars Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue. Speaking at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the actor shared, “Kade is a guy from the wrong side of the galaxy, whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built.”

Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in theaters on May 28, 2027.
