Renowned director Takashi Miike introduces his signature dark underworld style to the Bad Lieutenant franchise in a new trailer. The movie is set in a neon-lit Tokyo and will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this year.
The official synopsis reads, “Seasoned police detective Yabuki, hiding drug addiction, gambling debts, and guilt over past misdeeds, chases a shadowy killer tied to organized crime through Tokyo’s labyrinthine underworld. But when he’s paired with American FBI agent Gwen Birgssen, who’s hunting missing American tourist Megan Lovesey, their cases become entwined, revealing a disturbing connection. Delving deeper into each other’s murky pasts and a Tokyo that threatens to consume them, Yabuki and Gwen fight to reclaim their respective lives.”

What happens in Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo trailer?
The Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo trailer introduces Shun Oguri as a disgraced detective. He is shown investigating murders within the city while battling his addiction and resentment from his past. This often results in bursts of violence in the trailer’s clips.
Furthermore, his investigation takes a darker turn after a politician’s daughter goes missing. Forced to team up with an American FBI agent, he delves into the case. As the violence in the trailer rises, the investigation grows more intricate. It ultimately shows that there is something darker and more corrupt within the neo-noir Tokyo underworld.
The new movie is the third installment in the Bad Lieutenant franchise. However, it is not a sequel to its predecessors. The first movie was released in 1992 and was helmed by Abel Ferrara. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call — New Orleans, the 2009 feature, was directed by Werner Herzog. All three movies in the Bad Lieutenant franchise are standalone stories unrelated to each other.
Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo is written by Daisuke Tengan, who has previously worked with Miike on Audition and 13 Assassins. It also stars Lily James, Shotaro Mamiya, Liv Morgan, Jun Kunimura, and Hiroshi Tachi. The movie will have its world premiere at the 2026 TIFF, but it does not yet have a worldwide release date.
