The Family Stone Sequel Finally Gets the Green Light After 21 Years

The Stone family is coming back for another Christmas story, the Family Stone sequel will arrive over 20 years after the original arrived in theaters. The new movie will bring several familiar stars back together. It will also continue the story of the beloved family. The long-awaited follow-up is already giving fans a reason to revisit the holiday classic.

The Family Stone will reunite the original Family Stone cast more than two decades later

Searchlight Pictures announced the sequel, titled The Families Stone, on Saturday, Sept. 12. The company shared the news on Instagram with the caption, “The Families Stone. Coming Soon.” Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney and Craig T. Nelson will return for the new movie. Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider and Brian J. White will also reprise their roles.

Diane Keaton will not return in the sequel, as she passed away in October 2025. The Oscar-winning actress died from pneumonia at age 79. The first film featured Keaton in the role of Sybil Stone, the family’s matriarch. The sequel will take place 20 years after Sybil’s death in the original story.

The Family Stone first arrived in theaters in 2005. Parker played a businesswoman who struggled to connect with her boyfriend’s family during Christmas. The new story will again bring the Stone family together for the holiday season.

According to Deadline, the family faces an unexpected situation when their father invites the woman he loves to meet them. Production will take place in New York this fall, the outlet reported. The movie does not have a release date yet.

The sequel brings the original Stone family back together more than two decades after the first movie. With much of the original cast returning, the new film will continue the Stone family’s story while honoring the connection that made the first movie memorable.
