ITV confirmed major changes to The Voice UK for its upcoming 15th series. Aitch and Cheryl will join the coaching panel alongside Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.
Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will also take over presenting duties for the new series. ITV announced the changes while thanking Jones for his long-running contribution. The singer has been part of the show since its early seasons.
“ITV would like to thank the irreplaceable Sir Tom Jones for all his years on The Voice UK,” the broadcaster said. ITV also praised “the countless incredible and unforgettable moments he gave the show.”
The statements continued, “He has brought joy to audiences, and to every singer who performed for him and with him.” ITV acknowledged that the announcement was difficult because of the timing. The broadcaster said, “There was no easy way of making this announcement given the timing.”
ITV also described Jones as “an incredible, truly unique face of The Voice.” The broadcaster added that he remains “so deeply popular at ITV.” The comments have drawn attention because Jones is being replaced despite the praise.
Jones previously made clear on Instagram that leaving was not his decision. “To be clear, I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show,” he wrote. He said ITV made the decision because of “a financial difficulty with insurance.”
Jones also addressed claims that the show needed a refresh. He said, “They now say in the press they wanted to ‘refresh’ the show.” He added that there would be no coaching chair available for him.
The singer also criticized the proposed reduced role. “I’m not thrilled about that,” Jones said of appearing without being involved from the start. He later added, “There’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”
will.i.am is reportedly unhappy with how producers handled Jones’ departure. The changes now leave The Voice UK coaches with a significantly different lineup.
With Cheryl and Aitch joining the panel, the series is entering a new era. However, the reaction to Jones’ exit shows his lasting importance to the program.
