Julia Roberts returns to Broadway with the mostly wordless play Small Mouth Sounds. Roberts will collaborate with Paul Rudd alongside a star-studded cast featuring Sarah Paulson, Martin Freeman, Greta Lee, and Isaac Powell.

According to Just Jared, Small Mouth Sounds originally premiered in 2015, written by Bess Wohl, and features very little dialogue.  In author notes, Wohl wrote, “This play was inspired by a silent spiritual retreat I participated in at the Omega Institute in upstate New York. Like that retreat, much of the action of the play happens without words.”

The play featuring the new cast will premiere on February 18, 2027, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in NYC. However, opening night will take place in March.

Small Mouth Sounds will be directed by Joe Mantello, who is also directing the play Downstate. Viewers who are interested in watching the play can buy tickets starting Thursday, September 10 at 12 pm ET.

Producer Scott Rudin, in a statement, said, “There are a great many serious theatergoers who want to see plays of quality on Broadway. and who are willing and eager to opt in early and buy great seats at great prices. These theatergoers continually demonstrate that they know what they want. A serious Broadway playgoer – the audience member we most rely on, whose interest is ignited by authentically ambitious work – is going to need to see both of these plays. Pairing them this way – i.e. making them accessible to theatergoers who know how to say yes when there’s something worth saying yes to – is great for the audience and also great for the plays.”

Julia Roberts often stepped away from the spotlight to focus on her family. She will now return to the stage with a new play.
