Practical Magic 2 continues to disappoint critics as new reviews pour in, panning the highly anticipated sequel. The reviews have arrived just ahead of the movie’s theatrical premiere this week.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman have returned as the Owens sisters in Practical Magic 2, a sequel to the 1998 fantasy rom-com. Despite the highly anticipated reunion, the movie has failed to wow critics. Many have noted that it lacks the familiar charm of the original movie and slammed it for its predictable story.
ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim says, “No amount of midnight margaritas can save a sequel with a doomed premise.” He added, “Practical Magic 2 is a sequel that struggles to justify its own existence, largely because it has to undo nearly everything that made the ending of the original so satisfying.”
Taylor Gates from Collider writes, “Practical Magic 2 lacks the charm, whimsy, and heart that made the original film a classic; instead, it’s a mess, with a plot both convoluted and bland that will put no one under its spell.”
According to Variety’s Todd Gilchrist, Practical Magic 2 “delivers a retread of the signposts that made the original a beloved fixture for certain moviegoers, while failing to correct the flaws that made everyone else all but forget it for three decades.”
Amid the widespread negative reactions, some reviews are a bit more optimistic. For instance, The Guardian’s Adrian Horton says, “The midnight margarita redux may feel obligatory, but there’s just enough magic here to still, despite everything, cast a peculiar spell.”
Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman team up again for Practical Magic 2 after 28 years
Practical Magic 2 stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens, two sisters who descend from a long line of witches. The sequel takes place 25 years after the events of the first movie and is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel The Book of Magic.
The movie also returns with Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, along with new cast members Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, and Xolo Maridueña.
Practical Magic 2 arrives in theaters on September 10, 2026.
