94-Year-Old Legend’s Surprise Encore Is Pure Movie Magic

John Williams just gave thousands of movie fans the kind of Hollywood moment they probably never expected to witness. At 94, the legendary composer made a surprise encore appearance that quickly turned an already nostalgic concert into something unforgettable.

John Williams conducted the Star Wars ‘Imperial March’ during a surprise Hollywood Bowl encore

Williams surprised more than 13,000 fans at the Hollywood Bowl during Maestro of the Movies: A Tribute to John Williams. The composer appeared during the Sept. 4 encore and took the podium himself. Then, he conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic through the “Imperial March” from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Naturally, the crowd erupted as Williams raised his baton. Fans also filled the amphitheater with glowing lightsabers, giving the Star Wars favorite an appropriately cinematic backdrop. The moment carried extra weight because Williams had not conducted publicly since February 2024. He returned for another encore on Sept. 5, again leading the “Imperial March.”

David Newman conducted the main tribute program. According to the LA Phil, the concert celebrated Williams with music from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Jaws, and Jurassic Park. Moreover, organizers paired the music with more than 50 minutes of specially edited movie footage. That made Williams’ unexpected appearance an especially fitting finale.

His connection to the venue stretches back decades. In fact, the Hollywood Bowl has become closely associated with his annual movie-music performances and the sight of audiences raising lightsabers during Star Wars selections.

Williams’ impact also extends far beyond live concerts. Steven Spielberg’s documentary Music by John Williams recently helped the filmmaker complete his EGOT milestone after winning a Grammy.

Meanwhile, Star Wars remains firmly embedded in pop culture. Fans recently debated another franchise moment after Disneyland introduced a new Han Solo at Galaxy’s Edge. Williams, however, needed no costume or elaborate reveal to command the Bowl.

One baton, one instantly recognizable march, and thousands of glowing lightsabers were enough to create pure movie magic.
