According to sources, Met Gala 2027 may be in a spot of bother. Reportedly, a planned exhibit by designer John Galliano was cancelled after he stepped away due to public backlash.
The Met reportedly has just months to regroup after calling off its planned John Galliano exhibition
Page Six reports that Met Gala organizers may be hankering for a Plan B after the planned John Galliano exhibition was cancelled. Time is short, as the famous “first Monday in May” is just nine months away.
A source informed the outlet that preparations may already have been in full swing for “John Galliano: Horizons”, which was slated to open amid a star-spangled Met Gala turnout. The exhibition would have played a central role in raising funds for the museum’s Costume Institute.
The setback followed an Instagram statement issued by the designer, saying, “After much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.” He added, “I do not want the debate surrounding me to place the Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute. I also recognise and respect that an exhibition honouring my work would be painful for some.”
The decision came after Galliano’s participation received major backlash from civic leaders, donors, board members and Jewish groups. The dispute stems from Galliano’s reputation as antisemitic and racist, as he has displayed on many occasions. He was even convicted in a French court in 2011 following two separate antisemitic and racist outbursts.
Galliano was found guilty of public insults for reasons of religion, race or ethnicity. Reportedly, Galliano had burst out with anti-semitic invectives telling patrons at a restaurant that they would be “gassed and dead”. On another occasion, he allegedly shouted “Merry Christmas” at a woman he heard speaking in Hebrew.
The designer has since then apologised and blamed it all on alcohol and drugs. However, accusations against him have not stopped.
