Imagine hearing a car crash just outside your home not just once, but over and over again. That’s what multiple neighbors heard when a teenage driver drove a vehicle into one parked car after another on a street in Brooklyn. By the time the crashing finally stopped, 13 vehicles had been damaged, leaving a trail of debris and car parts on the road. The teenager then attempted to flee the scene on foot.
17-year-old driver did not have a license
On September 1 at around 7 p.m., a 17-year-old male who did not have a driver’s license hopped behind the wheel of a Polestar sedan with a 16-year-old passenger in tow and rammed into more than a dozen parked cars on East 2nd Street between Avenue P and Quentin Road, according to reports from News 12 and CBS New York.
One resident, Sandi Alashkar, recalled what she heard that evening: “We heard, like, a big boom. It sounded like lightning struck one of the cars.”
Resident Michael Coloccio said, “It was like a bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, repeated. It was pretty bad.”
Cellphone footage of the aftermath shows the front of one car completely torn off with its windshield wipers still on and its airbags deployed. Broken bumpers, broken glass, and ripped car parts were littered across the street. Multiple vehicles were seen with destroyed tires and serious dents.
Alashkar was thankful that she was not outside when the incident occurred. “I had just crossed the street. I was thinking, oh my God, what if I was still outside when this happened? I didn’t even care, honestly, about the car. I just was worried about my own safety.”
Police say that both teenagers fled the scene on foot but were later found and taken into custody. They have not released their names since they are minors.
The teens were issued criminal summonses for fleeing the scene of an accident and being an unlicensed operator.
