One of Stephen King’s most terrifying Lovecraftian horror stories is officially heading to Prime Video. The upcoming adaptation will bring King’s supernatural nightmare to life as a six-episode limited series.
The show, titled Crouch End, is directly based on King’s short story of the same name. Created and written by Paul Tomalin, the series will be directed by Tom Shankland. Production is set to take place on location in London, according to Deadline.
The synopsis of Crouch End reads, “London never sleeps deeply, and its dreams are uneasy. When global movie star Doris Freeman bursts into a London police station claiming that strange phenomena are behind the disappearance of her husband, police inspector Ted Vetter must investigate whether she’s telling the truth, whether she could be a murderer, or whether there’s something even more chilling at play…”
Nicole Clemens, VP of International Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, expressed her enthusiasm for the project.
“Stephen King is one of the defining storytellers of our time, and we’re thrilled to bring his Lovecraftian tale to life in London with Crouch End. This show will grip audiences worldwide with its visceral crime thriller and supernatural mystery.”
The original story by Stephen King was published in New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos in 1980. Later in 1993, a slightly different version of the horror science fiction was republished in Stephen King’s Nightmares & Dreamscapes collection. It is set in the real-life North London district of Crouch End.
What did director Tom Shankland say about the Stephen King Crouch End show?
The director of the series, Tom Shankland, has previously directed the 2021 British crime drama series The Serpent with Hans Herbots. He is also working on the upcoming Apple TV+ thriller series Berlin Noir based on Philip Kerr’s novels.
Reflecting on his new project, he added, “I’ve been a Stephen King super-fan forever. The chance to work with this great team and bring his utterly brilliant London mystery to life is beyond exciting; Crouch End will be cinematic, original and thought-provoking in equal measure.”
The six-part limited series will be produced by Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season. Paul Tomalin, Tom Shankland, Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane, and Ben Irving serve as executive producers on the project for Prime Video.
