A Rivals star, alongside other stars are set to lead HBO’s new television series. The upcoming show will explore a notorious murder case from the 1990s.
The Trial of Louise Woodward is expected to premiere on HBO in 2027. Catriona Chandler will portray Louise Woodward in the upcoming series, per Deadline. Chandler has previously played the role of Caitlin O in Disney+’s popular drama series Rivals. Alongside Chandler, British actor Joanne Froggatt has also joined the cast of The Trial of Louise Woodward. Froggatt has played Anna Bates in Downton Abbey.
The synopsis of the series, according to Variety, reads, “shocking true story of how, in 1997, an 18-year-old British au pair was accused of shaking to death a baby left in her care by her American host family, setting off an international media firestorm as the trial unfolds in full view of both the British and American public.”
What do we know about The Trial of Louise Woodward so far?
The cast of the series also features Meghann Fahy as Deborah and Sagar Radia as Sunil Eappen. The 5-episode series created by Matthew Barry will revisit the 1997 trial almost thirty years after the incident unfolded. Susanne Bier, who is one of the executive producers, will be directing the series as well.
Alongside Bier, Emily Feller, Frank Spotnitz for Big Light Productions, Antoine Douaihy, Tobi de Graaff, and Anton TV have joined the project as executive producers. The showrunner and creator, Matthew Barry, while talking about the upcoming show, said, per Variety, “The trial of Louise Woodward raised profound questions about childcare, working mothers, class, and the role of an emerging 24/7 media. Thirty years later, those questions feel more urgent and relevant than ever. I’m grateful to be working with Susanne and our partners at HBO to bring this story, in all its complexity, to the screen.”
According to Variety, executive Vice President of HBO programming and Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, Francesca Orsi, reflecting on the upcoming series and stated, “Matthew’s [Barry] compassionate approach to this gripping true story, paired with Susanne’s [Bier] powerfully distinct directorial vision and Meghann’s [Fahy] exceptional talent, has brought together an extraordinary creative team whose work we’re excited to share with our audience soon.”
