Josh Brolin has given the most promising update yet for Sicario 3, the long-gestating third one in Taylor Sheridan’s cartel thriller franchise. Nearly eight years after Day of the Soldado hit theaters, the actor says production is finally moving forward.
Josh Brolin confirms Sicario 3 with filming comment
Speaking with ScreenRant while promoting The Dog Stars, Brolin confirmed that Sicario 3 “is happening” and that filming will begin “soon.” The Oscar nominee starred as CIA officer Matt Graver in both previous installments, working alongside Benicio del Toro’s Alejandro Gillick to combat drug cartels along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Josh Brolin’s update came one year after he described Sicario 3 as looking “very, very real” following years of sporadic development updates. At that time, he did explain the uncertainty about whether Denis Villeneuve would return to direct after helming the 2015 original. Stefano Sollima directed the 2018 sequel.
Now, unanswered questions remain despite the encouraging news. Producers previously indicated that the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike halted progress, though writing was nearly complete. It remains unclear who is penning the final script, given Sheridan’s packed schedule across the Yellowstone universe and Paramount+ slate.
The director’s chair is another unknown. Producer Molly Smith recently revealed that Christopher McQuarrie was attached as “a partner” on Sicario 3, though his specific role was not specified. McQuarrie’s commitments include the Battlefield movie adaptation and reportedly King Conan. Villeneuve, meanwhile, remains occupied with Dune: Part Three and the next James Bond movie for Amazon MGM Studios.
Additionally, casting also remains unresolved. Del Toro’s Gillick survived the events of Day of the Soldado and last appeared recruiting a potential new sicario, leaving his role in the threequel open to interpretation. Producers have yet to confirm Emily Blunt’s return, though some fans remain hopeful. Jeffrey Donovan and Raoul Trujillo are the only other actors to have reprised their roles in the sequel.
All in all, with Josh Brolin now confirming that Sicario 3 is finally moving ahead, the franchise appears to be on its way to completing its trilogy after years of stops and starts.
