Josh Radnor has revealed that the bond among his How I Met Your Mother castmates has largely moved into the past, even though the group spent nearly a decade building one of television’s most recognizable sitcoms together.

Josh Radnor, who played Ted Mosby, addressed his current relationships with Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, and Alyson Hannigan on the Half the Picture podcast. Asked whether he remained close to his former castmates, he gave a blunt answer: “No. Not even a little bit.” He stressed that nothing dramatic caused the distance.
The actor said he and Segel still exchange occasional texts, although they have not met in person for “a really long time.” Radnor has also featured Smulders on his HIMYM rewatch podcast, but their conversations have mostly happened through Zoom. He last saw Hannigan at his 2024 wedding.
Harris represents a slightly different story. The actor recently appeared on Radnor’s rewatch podcast, which Radnor hosts with series co-creator Craig Thomas. Their conversation touched on tensions from the show’s production, and Radnor described that discussion as both “fascinating” and healing.
For Radnor, however, the distance does not erase the affection he still feels. He compared the experience to college, where people can spend nearly every day together before graduation sends everyone in different directions to “go out and live your life.“ He said the cast’s connection now feels closer to family than friendship because none of them chose the others.
That distinction seems to explain Radnor’s unusual description of their current bond. He believes the cast shares something “deep and rich” that could last forever, but he does not consider it an active relationship. Acting, he suggested, creates a sort of “love affair” situation that eventually ends when the production does.
The cast filmed 208 episodes over nine seasons, with Radnor, Harris, Segel, Smulders, and Hannigan forming the central ensemble. How I Met Your Mother still remains one of the most loved sitcoms ever.
