Karen Mulder breaks her silence in German Vogue after disappearing from the fashion world in 2000
Karen Mulder was one of the popular and prominent figures of the 90s fashion scene, standing head-to-head with icons like Cindy, Christy, Naomi, and Linda. However, her life did not pan out as expected. Mulder earned $10,000 (£7,400) a day and worked extensively for Chanel, Dior, Versace and Victoria’s Secret. She also appeared on the cover of Vogue nine times, the Daily Mail reported.
The supermodel disappeared from the scene in 2000 and went on to live a quiet and secluded life. In a surprise comeback, the fashion icon has been revealed as the cover star of German Vogue’s September issue. Additionally, she has broken her silence after 30 years and spoken to Vogue about why she stepped away at the height of her career.
Mulder, was one of the first whistleblowers who accused the industry of several ills. In 2021, the model spoke on a French talk show and alleged that the industry was rife with sexual abuse, drug use, and threats. The show was never aired, but Mulder went on to repeat her accusations to the French police.
Following her revelations, she was transported to a psychiatric facility in Paris. When she left, Mulder retracted her statement, saying that she had fabricated the accusations. “I was forced to say I had made it all up,’ she disclosed. She has also been mentioned in the Epstein files. Her agent, Gerald Marie, also faced rape allegations by six women, some of whom were models who worked for him in the 1980s and 1990s.
The supermodel has said that she felt this was the right time to come back. She has also expressed that she is looking at the future with nothing but positivity.
