Prince William and Kate Middleton used a secret trick to maintain their privacy during romantic trips. Long before they tied the knot in 2011, the couple tried to enjoy their time together without much fanfare by using aliases. A royal author has revealed this in his 2024 book.
Author reveals the secret trick Prince William and Kate Middleton used to enjoy romantic time
According to royal author Robert Jobson, Prince William and Kate Middleton used the names “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” to check into hotels during their romantic getaways (via Hola!). Jobson made this revelation in his book, Catherine, Princess of Wales. The book delves into the couple’s attempts to keep their relationship private while William remained one of the most famous young royals.
Jobson wrote, “For weekends and holidays, he’d often whisk Catherine off to Highgrove or Sandringham or to a cottage on the Balmoral estate. Occasionally, they checked into hotels, using the names Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which doubtless fooled no one.”
The name Mr. and Mrs. Smith is synonymous with the 2005 movie of the same name. However, whether the film influenced Prince William and his wife to use those names for their getaway is unclear, as they began dating years ago when they were students at the University of St. Andrews.
Elsewhere, Jobson wrote that this was far from William’s first attempt at going under the radar. Allegedly, he used the name “Steve” to enjoy the semblance of an ordinary life during his time in university. The royal author wrote, “In 2001, William quietly slipped into undergraduate life at St Andrews, where he used the pseudonym ‘Steve’ in a rather pathetic attempt to stay under the radar.”
In fact, Middleton also played along, addressing William as “Steve” during their university years. Prince William and Kate Middleton became friends at St. Andrews before they eventually began dating. It became more difficult for them to go under the radar in the following years.
