Charles Spencer’s upcoming book about Princess Diana has been framed as a potential “scores to be settled” moment for the royal family. Diana’s younger brother has said he wants to tell her story from his own perspective.
However, royal biographer Tom Bower believes the project could reopen old wounds involving King Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry, and the wider Windsor family. Titled “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” the book is set to be released next month.
Royal biographer explains Charles Spencer’s intention in writing Princess Diana book
As per a GB News post on X dated August 19, 2026, Tom Bower discussed why Charles Spencer was writing a book about Princess Diana. The post quoted him saying there were “masses of scores to be settled.”
In the interview, Bower said Earl Spencer wanted to set “his record straight.” He also called it “a fascinating story” because Diana’s brother had “a very special angle.” Bower claimed Spencer was “furious with King Charles” and “very pro-Harry.”

Meanwhile, Bower added that the book could create fresh discomfort for the monarchy. He claimed Spencer had “masses of gripes” and “masses of unhappiness to be created.” The royal author also said the project would revisit “a very, very painful time.”
However, he rejected the idea that writing the book was automatically unfair. Bower called Charles Spencer “commercial” and said he was “a person who actually writes for a living.” Bower cheekily said Spencer can try to surpass his nephew Harry’s book sales. He stated, “Harry’s book was the most bought book, sold book, in the history of nonfiction. Perhaps there’s family rivalry. Charles Spencer wants to beat his nephew.”
Still, a BBC report portrayed the book as Spencer’s effort to protect Princess Diana’s legacy and set the record straight from his perspective. The Earl said he wanted to speak “on Diana’s behalf” in an “openly positive way.” He also revealed that he had been “inundated yet again” with interview requests.
For context, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister” is scheduled for release in the UK on September 22. Bower said the key question would be whether the book proves “balanced” or “vindictive.” For Charles Spencer, Princess Diana, and King Charles, the book could reopen a long-running and deeply scrutinized chapter of the royal family’s history.
