Former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden has opened up about how grief continues to shape her life. She said she turns to her late son, Beau Biden, as her husband, former President Joe Biden, faces stage 4 prostate cancer. In a recent podcast interview, Jill shared the emotional details. She said Beau remains close to her heart.
Jill Biden said she prays to Beau every morning amid Joe Biden’s cancer battle
Jill spoke about her grief during an Aug. 17 appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show. She told Jamie Kern Lima that she prays to Beau “every morning” and asks him to be with the family. Jill said she sometimes feels frustrated and asks, “Beau, where are you? I need you?” When she needs extra strength, she visits his cemetery.
Beau died in 2015 at age 46 after battling glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer. He was the eldest son of Joe and his first wife, Neilia Hunter Biden, who died in a car accident in 1972 with their baby daughter Naomi. Jill helped raise Beau and his brother, Hunter, after she married Joe, and the couple later welcomed their daughter, Ashley.
Jill said she never thought Beau would die and kept hoping until his last breath. “I never, ever gave up hope until Beau took his last breath,” she said. She added that she felt “betrayed” by his death and struggled to understand it.
Jill added that she and Joe still feel Beau’s presence with them. When Lima asked if she felt Beau’s presence every day, Jill replied, “He’s with me every day even when I’m not thinking about him.” She said Beau is in her heart and that Joe feels the same. Jill also recalled seeing an eagle fly across the lake after Beau’s memorial service. She said she believes she sees Beau in nature, whether those moments are real or not.
In an Aug. 5 interview on Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, Jill discussed Joe’s health. She said in May 2025, Joe was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer and that the cancer had already spread to his bones. She also said he undergoes testing every three months and described the cancer journey as “constant,” “daily” and “challenging.” Jill’s latest comments show how she continues to draw strength from Beau while supporting Joe through his cancer battle.
